NEON offers a series of trainings on opioid misuse and addiction, targeted to Law Enforcement, Health Care Workers, CHWs, THWs, and Community Members. Trainings include:
Two- to four-hour trainings on a variety of topics, including:
Brain Basics, Motivational Interviewing for Addictions, Compassion Fatigue and Addictions, Health Risks of Addictions, Family Impacts of Addictions, and What is Medication-Assisted Treatment and How to Support It.

Brief Training Descriptions:

Brain Basics: Understand the anatomy, development, and functions of the brain, particularly in the context of substance or opioid use disorders.

Motivational Interviewing for Addictions: Designed to help health and social service providers better serve individuals with substance use disorders or opioid use disorders.

Compassion Fatigue and Addiction: Learn how to help individuals gain an understanding of the similarities and differences between burnout, compassion fatigue, and moral distress and how it pertains to addiction.

Health Risks of Addictions: Broaden your understanding of the physical and mental health risks associated with opioid misuse and how to connect community members to relevant resources and services.

Family Impacts of Addictions: Learn more about opioid misuse response, infection risks for PWID, and strategies to interact with the support individuals with SUD/OUD to continue medical treatment.

Medication-Assisted Treatment and How to Support It: (MAT) is used to treat substance use disorders as well as sustain recovery and prevent overdose. Learn how to connect community members to (MAT) services and collaborate with providers to support community success.
Upcoming Trainings
Compassion Fatigue and Addictions
Learn how to help individuals gain an understanding of the similarities and differences between burnout, compassion fatigue, and moral distress and how it pertains to addiction.
March 11th, 2025 from 1:00 - 4:00 PM PT
For this 3-hour online training, participants will be able to conduct personal risk and resiliency assessments as well as develop transition rituals and other self-care practices.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe the similarities and differences between burnout, compassion fatigue, and moral distress
- Explain reasons working with individuals living with addiction can lead to compassion fatigue
- Be able to list at least five signs of compassion fatigue
- Be able to identify ways they can promote workforce wellness to prevent stresses that lead to compassion fatigue
- Be able to conduct a personal risk and resiliency assessment
- Develop a plan for self-care
*This training offers 3 CEU contact hours for THW and MHACBO.

Learn more about opioid misuse response, infection risks for PWID, and strategies to interact and support individuals with addictions to continue medical treatment.
Offered Online April 23rd, 2025 from 1:00 - 5:00 PM PT
This 4-hour online training course was developed for Traditional Health Workers (THWs), community members, and professionals who know and work directly with community members struggling with the impacts of addiction.
Participants will learn about roles that can show up in a family with a loved one experiencing addiction, impacts on family members, ripple effects in the community, and strategies for THWs to reach and assist families impacted by addictions.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Name the three possible roles that can show up in a family with a loved one experiencing addiction
- Name three ways in which individuals in a family can be impacted by a loved one's opioid use.
- Identify three “ripple effects” of opioid use in a community.
- Identify two ways Community Health Workers can reach and assist families impacted by addiction.
*This training offers 4 CEU contact hours for THW and MHACBO.
